This Is Northern New South Wales

All go for Bello!

unspecifiedPreparations for Bello Winter Music (7-10 July) are in full swing in the little NSW mid north coast town of Bellingen. The town’s clubs, cafes and halls will host over 80 international and national acts including Willie Watson (US), L-FRESH The LION, Mojo Juju, Sahara Beck, Kylie Auldist (also of The Bamboos) and Tijuana Cartel. The in-town festival setting means punters can amble from gig to gig through the quaint streets of Bellingen (or ride the free psychedelic Magic Bus) and enjoy the music in intimate, cosy indoor spaces.

“Last year was our first year. Saturday sold out as soon as word started to get out about how good it was,” said General Manager and longtime Bellingen local Maggie Quirk “This year tickets are flying out the door. Thursday Opening Night and Saturday tickets are very close to selling out. Bello Winter Music is a terrific little festival and we’re thrilled people are discovering it.”

Bello Winter Music is a family-friendly, affordable festival for all ages with the emphasis on diversity, discovery and collaboration between musicians both on and off the stage.

“We always aim to put together a program that is diverse in genres and ages and has equal representation of genders. We’re happy to book a mix of local acts and an act from New York City, and put them on the same stage,” says Glenn Wright, Director of Bello Winter Music as well as Bello’s summer sister festival, Mullum Music. “I think it’s exciting to program a jazz act followed by a hip-hop artist, then a folk singer. We also program special one-off events or particular venues where you don’t know who you’re going to see up on stage together until you get in. All the musicians get involved and the punters love it.”

While the musical line-up is a drawcard in itself, Bello Winter Music runs an environmental and sustainability mini-festival, Bello LeaF, alongside the music program which consists of a series of workshops and activities like Primitive Fire Making, River Exploration, Community Gardening and Rainforest walking tours.

Free street theatre, a festival marketplace and the Magic Bus also make it a popular weekend event for families. This year acts such as The Amazing Drumming Monkeys, The Cassettes 80s dance group, and magician Liam Power are on hand to entertain the young and young at heart.

“Bello Winter Music is an easy, non-gated festival to dip in and out of. There’s lots of fun, interesting things going on in the streets so it appeals across ages,” said Maggie Quirk “The town itself is an attraction, right on a beautiful river with heritage buildings and little cafes and shops, it’s a centre for arts and crafts, and the community is laid back and friendly.”
