BBSF Start Me Up – Creative Kids

As part of the 6 month art mentorship program won by Camille Wiseman for 1st prize in the 2012 stART me up artshow, one of the workshops included collaborating artwork on a surfboard with Ed Sinnott of ESP surfboards, Byron Bay.

Hanging out with Ed on a sunny winter Saturday morning, he was stoked to design a board and the artwork with Camille. Ed is a generous supporter of many local events and is donating one of the major prizes for stART-me-up 2013, which will be the board he and Camille collaborate on.

After completing art school in 1975, Ed started to paint surfboards with well-known surfing legends such as Michael Peterson, Terry Richardson, Frank Latta and the like, in Pambula on the South Coast of NSW, inspiring him to learn the art of shaping boards, a passion he is still displaying today.  Ed loves to pass his love for creative outlets onto the grommets in the region as he thinks it is vital to keep this passion and creative pursuit alive.

Moving to Byron Bay over 13 years ago from the South Coast to chase the warmth, Ed has since become a high school art and design teacher, placing importance on helping kids to enjoy expressing their creativity at the same time as providing inspiration for them to continuously practice their artistic skills.

The board Ed and Camille designed together will be on display during the 2013 Byron Bay Surf Festival, at the Surf Culture Now art show, opening on the Friday night Oct 25th. Ed really wanted the board to be exhibited at this event, as it is an opportunity for Camille to showcase her work to the wider community.

As we left the factory to go for a surf, Ed said to Camille, “Don’t forget to keep it fun. It always has to be fun.”
