After many months of preparation and many years of dreaming of a labyrinth for Byron, storyteller Jenni Cargill-Strong, artist Jacquelina Wills and Inica are excited to invite the community to the Opening Ceremony for our Sacred Waters Temporary Labyrinth this Saturday, November 5 at 4pm, at the Clarkes Beach end of the Byron Bay foreshore.
Please come along to this family friendly free event to dedicate our labyrinth which will be maintained until Saturday, December 3. The labyrinth is steeped in history and ancient ones can be found on most continents in the world. It was thought that walking the stone labyrinth bestowed fortune, protection, healing and magical aid. Walk the labyrinth and offer a prayer to our waters, the health and happiness of yourself, your community, and your planet.
Arakwal custodian, Delta Kay will give welcome to country, Moari singer Whaia Whaea will give a traditional call, storyteller Jenni Cargill-Strong will tell a water story and internationally acclaimed gong artist Michael Askill, with his partner Samaya will be presenting interactive gong and Himalayan singing bowls filled with water for children and families to experience and enjoy. Jacquelina Wills will lead a water ritual, after which the labyrinth will be open for people to walk it. The Knitting Nana’s, as protectors of the water, will be in attendance.
You are invited to wear water colours and bring a flower, shell or simple, natural offering if you would like to. This is a catalyst event for the Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan, partly funded by Byron Shire Council’s Placemaking Seed Fund.Â
