After 30 years, the curtain is lifting on the Brunswick Picture House. The iconic site on Fingal Street in Brunswick Heads has had a new lease on life and opens its doors this coming Easter weekend. A fun packed program of events has been created to celebrate the occasion. Circus, family-friendly theatre, a cheeky evening cabaret show and a classic movie night will entertain, while the newly renovated kiosk will serve refreshments from its playful menu.

The Brunswick Picture House will be the new home to circus-cabaret-variety sensation La Soirée, the critically acclaimed, Olivier Award-winning and much loved show that has been touring the globe for the past eleven years. Brett Haylock, producer and creator of La Soirée and its sister show Club Swizzle is spearheading the new incarnation of the Brunswick Picture House and is delighted to find a home in Bruns.

“I stumbled across the building and it was love at first sight,” says Haylock. “It speaks of an old-world showbiz era and I could not bear the thought of it being torn down. I acquired the property with the vision of creating a reimagined version of what the original Brunswick Pictures was. It has been a labour of love to re-build her, but I feel it is vital to create places to foster arts and entertainment, rather than let them perish, particularly in vibrant communities like this one. From Easter, we will be presenting films, music and live theatre, but most importantly, a place for people to gather, gossip, laugh and have fun.”

GRAND OPENING EASTER WEEKEND PROGRAM

The Really Good Good Friday Circus Bonanza

An extravaganza of performances from an array of local and international performers, this all ages gala of epic proportions will tickle the funny bones of the young and young at heart.

The Inaugural Picture House Cheeky Cabaret

In the tradition of La Soirée and Club Swizzle, this cabaret variety night is guaranteed to tantalise and titillate. A star-studded line-up of Australian and international darlings of the cabaret circuit will leave you begging for more. Bring Grandma, but leave the little ones at home.

Kaput

Direct from a sell-out North American tour, self-proclaimed “elegant buffoon” Tom Flanagan presents his award-winning show throughout the Easter weekend. Described as “physical comedy at its best,” Kaput revives the art of silent movie- esque slapstick. An hilariously funny mix of chaos, comedy and acrobatics for all ages.

The Pitts Family Circus

Everyone’s favourite local dysfunctional family circus is here. Employing spectacular circus, quirky characters and more child labour than ever, the Pitts Family will impress, surprise and touch you, in more ways than one.

Cinema Classic: The Wizard of Oz

Born of the same era as the original Brunswick Pictures, then named the Victory Theatre, this iconic Hollywood masterpiece in all its Technicolor glory is the perfect film to propel the Brunswick Picture House into her new existence. No, Dorothy, we’re not in Kansas anymore.
