This Is Northern New South Wales

A morning at the MCG

Do yourself a favour and go and take a look at the Mullumbimby Community Garden (MCG). The MCG is an interactive facility for the people of Byron Shire – a place where whole families and individuals of all ages and abilities  share friendships, ideas and knowledge. It is set on over 2 Hectares of land tucked away right at the very end of Stuart St (if you drive into Mullum turn left at Santos and Drive right to the end of the street and you will see a sign)

The MCG incorporates the principles of organic gardening, composting, water conservation, energy efficiency, recycling in the garden. Creativity and imagination is encouraged with art and craft activities often being held. The garden consists of allotments where members can grow their own organic fruit, vegetables and flowers for a small membership fee per year.

There are communal gardens where participants share the gardening and harvest, and from which charities can be supplied with fresh produce for people in need. Jeanette Martin keeps a watchful smile over the garden’s operations and is happy to answer any questions that you may have, and was recently kind enough to give me a full tour, there is a pizza oven, kids area, chooks, and everything you need from worm juice to organic seedlings! you can even buy some of the awesome produce by donation from the “food for all” section and munch on snow pea’s whilst your at it!

The Mullumbimby Community Garden welcomes applications for new members.

The annual membership fee is:

Individual $24 p.a.

Family $36 p.a.

Organisation $48 p.a.

Annual Plot rentals are:

Small Plot (2.4m x 2.4m) $24 p.a

Medium Plot (2.4m x 4.8m) $36p.a.

Large Plot (4.8 m x 4.8m) $48p.a.

All over the world urban land is being cultivated into productive food gardens. Community gardens play a role in improving access to fresh locally grown food, as well as providing valuable recreational activity, social interaction and educational benefits for the local community.
