“Sam” the Gannet

Monday morning and our friends from Australian Seabird Rescue in Ballina call to say they are releasing “Sam” an injured Gannet from the Skennars Head cliffs at 1pm. Sam had injured legs and has been in care in the seabird rehab centre in Ballina. When he arrived into care he was just over 1kg in weight and today was released at a health 2.2kg.

He was a little apprehensive at first, but after about 5-10mins we think Sam spotted his mates all sitting on the water about 1km out to sea. We watched on as he took off and flew straight out to join them as if they were there waiting for him.
